Wool Mattress Pads

Most people use mattress pads and covers are used to protect mattresses from stains, and moisture so their mattresses will last longer. For years parents have used plastic pads to cover infant and toddler mattresses to protect them from the potty training stages.

As technology progresses, we have now found out that mattress pads have other beneficial uses other than stain and moisture blockers. Mattress pads and covers help to block allergens and dust mites and depending on what the mattress pad is made of can reduce exposure to toxic chemicals.

We have found with the use of organic mattress pads more specifically all natural wool mattress pads to be the most beneficial pads to use.  In addition to all the usual reasons for mattress pads, wool will also help keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And best of all- wool is a natural fire retardant so you will feel confident that the mattress pads your family is sleeping on is has not been sprayed with fire safety chemicals (which are important but the actual chemicals have been found to be really toxic and hazardous).

Organic Wool Mattress Pads
Often people think of old fashioned scratchy wool suits and sweaters and think...how awful.  I don't want to sleep on that.  However it is just the opposite.  Wool mattress pads are usually made from either lambs wool (often called fleece) or Alpaca.  They are so, soft, plush, and luxurious the wool mattress toppers are often mistaken for the very popular down filled mattress pads.

Wool Mattress Covers Benefits

  • Wool mattress pads are naturally hypoallergenic
  • Wool mattress pads are naturally anti-bacterial
  • Wool mattress pads naturally resist dust mites.
  • Mattress pads add comfort to your mattress
  • Wool mattress pads extend the life of your mattress.
  • Wool naturally absorbs moisture and the fibers "breathe" unlike man made fibers.
  •  Wool mattress pads are ideal for people who need a little extra help with body temperature regulation.
  • Wool mattress pads aid in creating additional warmth when it's cold.
  • Wool mattress pads naturally wick away moisture (sweat) when it's hot which helps keep our bodies cooler.
  • Wool naturally dries quickly so it is more resistant to allergens that harbor or grow in moist and damp environments.

Worn Out Mattress

Is your mattress pad worn out- Features to consider when purchasing a new wool mattress pad or cover.

1. What materials is it made out of.  Is made from 100% virgin lambs wool?  Does the lambs wool or alpaca wool come from the united states?

2. What is the thickness of the wool mattress pad.

3. Is the mattress pad all natural or has it been treated with a fire retardant?

The natural fibers of wool mattress pads are strong and will help your mattress pad last for many years.  There are two main types of wool mattress pads:

Lambs Wool Mattress Pad: All natural lambs' lamb's wool may "flatten" sooner than other types of fibers in mattress pads, however the wool can be quickly revived with a steam cleaning. Lamb's wool mattress pads can be machine washed, but most manufacturers will recommend steam cleaning to keep the fibers fluffy (to hold its shape) and prevent shedding in your washing machine.

Alpaca Wool Mattress Pads: All natural alpaca wool is sometimes blended with other wools because it is super soft and does not hold it's shape as well.  Since the wools are blended the alpaca mattress pads seem to be firmer then the 100% lamb's wool mattress pads.  Alpaca wool mattress pads are usually marked as dry cleaning only because of the "blend" you should read the label for each product to see.
